Last week I was visiting my Grandmother Mamie Hansberry and mid visit she said I am going to go into the garage and get you something. 10 minutes later she returned with this beautiful Lord & Taylor coat that belong to her mother Nannie.. Bought sometime in the late 40’s early 50’s. I could not believe my eyes. Beautiful and in perfect condition.
I can’t quite describe the feeling I got when I slipped on this super heavy beautifully made coat. I felt empowered.. I felt happy…I felt like I was touching a part of my family history that I had never touched before. Not to mention that my great grandma had amazing taste!
I could not wait to wear it..
There is
something about vintage clothing that is so interesting for me. I used to wear a whole lot of vintage and every time I would put a vintage item on I would have this overwhelming desire to know who it once belonged to and what happened in their life.. Was it their favorite piece?
Knowing exactly where this coat came from is quite beautiful. Much to their dismay most of my (Hansberry) families personal items where left behind when they came to California in the 1960’s. Personal treasured items sold at auction without their permission. Long story and one day I will tell it. This coat was one of the few items that made it and that is for me absolute perfection. I am so honored that I get to wear and share with you a part of my family’s history.. even if it is just in a coat…
